How to read the numbers on your tyre sidewall

Reinforced tyre sidewall

The size code

Take 225/55R17 101W. Reading left to right:

  • 225 — section width in millimetres.
  • 55 — aspect ratio: the sidewall height is 55% of the width.
  • R — radial construction.
  • 17 — rim diameter in inches.

Load index and speed rating

The 101 is the load index and W the speed symbol. Load index 101 means 825 kg per tyre; W means the tyre is rated to 270 km/h. Both are set by ISO 4000-1, so they mean the same thing on any brand.

Load index Max load per tyre
91 615 kg
95 690 kg
101 825 kg

Where to check yours

Match the code on your current tyre against the size tables on each pattern page — every HILO pattern lists its full range of sizes with the load and speed rating for each one.
