HILO lists two highway-terrain (H/T) patterns for SUVs: PIONEER PC4 and SPORT XV1. The fastest way to choose between them is the size printed on your current tyres.
- 15, 16, 21 or 22-inch wheels: SPORT XV1 is the only one of the two listed in these rim sizes.
- 235/50R18 or 235/50R20: only PIONEER PC4 lists these two sizes.
- 19 shared sizes from 17 to 20 inches: both patterns are listed. In 11 of them the load index or speed symbol differs, so compare the full entry against your vehicle’s tyre placard.
Still deciding whether H/T suits your driving at all? Start with our guide to choosing H/T or A/T for your Australian SUV. This article assumes you have settled on highway terrain and want to know which HILO pattern to shortlist.
Start with the size on your current tyre
Your tyre size is moulded into the sidewall, for example 225/65R17 102H. The number after the R is the rim diameter in inches. The number and letter after that are the load index and speed symbol. Our sidewall guide explains each part.
Once you have the rim diameter, this table shows where each pattern is listed. To check one exact size across the whole HILO range, use the tyre size finder.
| Rim diameter | SPORT XV1 entries | PIONEER PC4 entries | Sizes listed in both |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15″ | 14 | – | – |
| 16″ | 17 | – | – |
| 17″ | 15 | 4 | 4 |
| 18″ | 20 | 10 | 9 |
| 19″ | 9 | 4 | 4 |
| 20″ | 15 | 3 | 2 |
| 21″ | 3 | – | – |
| 22″ | 2 | – | – |
| Total | 95 | 21 | 19 |
SPORT XV1 has 95 entries covering 81 distinct sizes. Some sizes appear twice because they come with a second load or speed option. At 15 inches, several also come in whitewall (wsw) or raised-white-letter (RWL) versions. PIONEER PC4 lists 21 sizes, each once, from 17 to 20 inches.
The two PIONEER PC4 sizes with no SPORT XV1 equivalent are 235/50R18 101V XL and 235/50R20 104V XL.

Load figures are the maximum load per tyre from each product page.
The 19 sizes fall into three groups.
Same service description in both (8 sizes). 225/65R17, 225/60R18, 235/60R18, 235/65R18, 255/55R18, 235/55R19, 245/55R19 and 255/55R20 have a matching entry in both tables. In three of these, SPORT XV1 also lists a second speed option. For these sizes the specification alone will not decide it.
Different load index (3 sizes). In 225/60R17 and 235/65R17, PIONEER PC4 is the Extra Load (XL) entry with the higher maximum load: 875 kg against 775 kg, and 1,000 kg against 900 kg. In 225/55R18 the order flips. SPORT XV1 lists 102W XL at 850 kg and PIONEER PC4 lists 98V at 750 kg.
Same load, different speed symbol (8 sizes). The speed symbols in these tables are H (210 km/h), V (240 km/h), W (270 km/h) and Y (300 km/h). SPORT XV1 has the higher symbol in six of these sizes, with W or Y against V. PIONEER PC4 is higher in two, 215/60R17 and 245/60R18, where it lists V and SPORT XV1 lists H.
Your vehicle’s tyre placard gives the load and speed requirements to work from. Treat it as the minimum and have your fitter confirm that the entry you pick meets it.
What each product page says the pattern is for
PIONEER PC4. The product page describes a highway-terrain SUV pattern “for owners who spend their time on sealed roads”. It lists four design points from the manufacturer’s catalogue: four straight grooves for water drainage, multi-siping for traction on varying road surfaces, an improved footprint aimed at fuel consumption and tyre life, and a casing construction intended for a comfortable ride. These are the manufacturer’s design aims. The page does not present them as test results.
SPORT XV1. The page classifies it as an SUV H/T pattern and publishes its specification table without tread-design claims. It advises choosing by the complete size, load index and speed symbol, and talking through your usual routes, passengers, loads and towing with a fitter. Its table is the wider of the two: 15 to 22 inches, 13 ZR-rated sizes and speed symbols up to Y.
Both tables also publish EU tyre-label grades for each size. If those grades matter to you, compare the row for your exact size. The H/T guide explains what the label measures and what it leaves out.
Which pattern to shortlist
- 15 or 16-inch wheels: SPORT XV1, with 31 entries across these two rim sizes.
- 21 or 22-inch wheels: SPORT XV1, with five entries.
- 235/50R18 or 235/50R20: PIONEER PC4.
- Your placard calls for W or Y: SPORT XV1 is the only one of the two with W or Y entries. Every PIONEER PC4 entry is H or V.
- One of the 19 shared sizes: pick the entry that meets your placard. If both do, read the PIONEER PC4 and SPORT XV1 pages and confirm which one is available in that size through a trade enquiry.
You can see both patterns alongside HILO’s all-terrain, rugged-terrain and mud-terrain options in the SUV & 4×4 range.
Before you enquire
A published size is a catalogue listing. Both product pages note that Australian availability varies, so check current stock when you ask.
- Copy the full size and service description from the product page table, for example 255/45R20 105V XL.
- Note your vehicle, the figures on its tyre placard and your suburb.
- Workshops, tyre shops and fleet buyers can send a trade enquiry, and the blank enquiry template (CSV) helps when you are ordering several sizes.
PIONEER PC4 and SPORT XV1 questions
Does PIONEER PC4 come in 16-inch sizes?
No. The PIONEER PC4 table lists 21 sizes from 17 to 20 inches. For 15 or 16-inch wheels, SPORT XV1 is the HILO H/T pattern to look at.
Are PIONEER PC4 and SPORT XV1 the same tyre with different names?
No. Each has its own tread pattern, product page and specification table. Nineteen sizes appear in both tables, and 11 of those have a different load index or speed symbol.
Which one has the higher speed rating?
It depends on the size. SPORT XV1 has W and Y entries in some sizes, while every PIONEER PC4 entry is H or V. In 215/60R17 and 245/60R18, PIONEER PC4 lists V where SPORT XV1 lists H.
What does XL mean in these tables?
XL stands for Extra Load. In both tables, every XL entry lists a maximum pressure of 340 kPa, and its load capacity shows in the load index. Match the load index to your placard and confirm the choice with your fitter.
